Our WASH team completed installation of 14 rehabilitated boreholes in the Bossangoa district, bringing safe water access to over 9,000 people who previously depended on contaminated rivers.
The project, funded by a partnership with WaterAid and the European Commission, involved drilling new wells and rehabilitating existing but non-functional boreholes across 12 villages in the Ouham Prefecture.
Each borehole is fitted with a hand pump and serves an average of 650 people. Community water management committees have been trained in each village to ensure long-term sustainability and maintenance.
Before this intervention, women and girls walked an average of 3.2 kilometers to collect water — often from rivers contaminated with agricultural runoff and animal waste. Waterborne diseases accounted for 38% of clinic visits in the area.
Early data shows a 60% reduction in diarrheal disease cases in the first month after installation.
