When armed groups burned the Kaga-Bandoro primary school in 2023, 340 children lost their classroom. We tell the story of the community — and one teacher — who refused to give up.
Teacher Marie-Claire Bambote continued holding classes under a mango tree for 18 months. Rain, wind, and the dry season's dust couldn't stop her. 'Education is the only weapon against ignorance and violence,' she told us.
In 2025, Share Hope partnered with the community to rebuild. Local families contributed labor, and our construction team provided materials and expertise. The result: a four-classroom school with a tin roof, latrines, and a water point.
Today, 412 children attend classes — more than before the fire. The school now has six teachers and runs in two shifts to accommodate demand.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony brought together community leaders, parents, and local government officials. Marie-Claire received a community hero award for her perseverance.
